On the 12th of September 2013 NASA confirmed Voyager 1 entered interstellar space. This makes Voyager 1 the furthest man made object from earth.
What’s Voyager 1?
Voyager 1 was an unmanned space probe launched by NASA on the 5th of September 1977. Launched within weeks it’s sister satellite Voyager 2 both were sent to take images and reading from the distant giants of the Solar System.
Where is Voyager 1?
NASA say that currently Voyager is 19 BILLION kilometres away from our Sun. That’s about 4 times the distant between the Sun and Neptune (our furthest planet). Another way to look at it is it’s about 127 times as far away from the Sun as Earth!

This artist’s concept puts huge solar system distances in perspective. The scale bar is measured in astronomical units (AU), with each set distance beyond 1 AU representing 10 times the previous distance. Each AU is equal to the distance from the sun to the Earth. It took from 1977 to 2013 for Voyager 1 to reach the edge of interstellar space. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
